Semaphorin-5A is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SEMA5A gene.
Members of the semaphorin protein family, such as SEMA5A, are involved in axonal guidance during neural development (Adams et al., 1996).[supplied by OMIM]
Semaphorine 5A also plays a role in autism, reducing the ability of neurons to form connections with other neurons in certain brain regions.
This gene belongs to the semaphorin gene family that encodes membrane proteins containing a semaphorin domain and several thrombospondin type-1 repeats. Members of this family are involved in axonal guidance during neural development. This gene has been implicated as an autism susceptibility gene.
Function: May act as positive axonal guidance cues
