Steroid sulfatase (or steryl-sulfatase), formerly known as Arylsulfatase C, is a sulfatase enzyme involved in the metabolism of steroids. It is encoded by the STS gene. The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of sulfated steroid precursors to estrogens during pregnancy. The encoded protein is found in the endoplasmic reticulum, where it acts as a homodimer. Mutations in this gene are known to cause X-linked ichthyosis (XLI). [provided by RefSeq]. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications.
Function: Conversion of sulfated steroid precursors to estrogens during pregnancy.
