BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting protein 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BNIP2 gene. This gene is a member of the BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kd-interacting protein (BNIP) family. It interacts with the E1B 19 kDa protein, which protects cells from virally-induced cell death. The encoded protein also interacts with E1B 19 kDa-like sequences of BCL2, another apoptotic protector. [provided by RefSeq]. Sequence Note: The translation start codon selected for this RefSeq is conserved in human and Rhesus macaque. A possible downstream start codon, which shows better cross-species conservation, would shorten the protein by 121 aa. The shorter protein is described in the literature, including PMID:7954800. No experimental evidence exists to show which start codon is used in vivo. Publication Note: This RefSeq record includes a subset of the publications that are available for this gene. Please see the Gene record to access additional publications.
Implicated in the suppression of cell death. Interacts with the BCL-2 and adenovirus E1B 19 kDa proteins.
